Guidehouse Insights Report Finds Fastest Growing Commercial and Industrial Microgrid Segment in the World
Declining costs make the use of renewable energy more attractive, but the problems of integrating legacy infrastructure remain

BOULDER, Colo., October 6, 2021 / PRNewswire / – A new report from Guidehouse Insights examines the public policies and technology drivers that are accelerating the adoption of commercial and industrial microgrids (C&I). The report provides global forecasts for the microgrid sub-segments in terms of capacity and implementation expenditure through 2030.
Historically, the C&I microgrid segment has lagged behind other microgrid market segments mainly due to the lack of a clear value proposition based on the return on investment of microgrids. Over the past decade, however, it has become the fastest growing microgrid market in the world. According to a new report from Guidehouse Insights, the C&I microgrid market is evolving into one of the most innovative microgrid markets, as technological advancements make the transition from fossil fuels to renewables increasingly profitable.
“The cost of solar PV continues to drop over time, making microgrids more attractive to C&I customers, as their main goal is to reduce costs,” says Pierre Asmus, Research Director at Guidehouse Insights. “Additionally, competitively priced energy storage, which most often comes in the form of batteries, is the key technological advancement in hardware that should enable a more attractive micro-grid value proposition for C&I micro-grids. “
However, the C&I micro-grids segment also faces some hurdles. Many C&I customers, such as data centers, focus first on what they see as practical solutions to their reliability problems, such as backup diesel generators and redundant power supplies. Connecting newer infrastructure (eg solar PV and advanced batteries) to older existing infrastructure can present challenges.
The report, Commercial and industrial microgrids, foresees four sub-segments of C&I micro-grids (Grid-Linked Commercial, Grid-Linked Industrial, Distant Commercial, and Distant Industrial) in terms of capacity and implementation expenses. It also presents the profiles of the leading micro-grids providers focused on the C&I market. The report reviews the public policies and technology drivers that are accelerating the adoption of C&I microgrids, including trends towards modular systems and energy as a service (EaaS) offerings. The forecast includes all major regions of the world and runs through 2030. A summary of the report is available for free download from the Guidehouse Insights website.
